Film “I’m not from here” by Giedrė Žickytė and Maite Alberdi qualified for Oscars 2017

The joint film by the Lithuanian and Chilean creators Giedrė Žickytė and Maite Alberdi “I’m not from here” won the award for the best short documentary at the largest international documentary film festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest (Great Britain), thus qualifying for the 2017 Academy Awards in US.

The international documentary film festival Sheffield Doc/Fest is the third largest documentary film festival in the world and the largest international documentary film festival in Great Britain, organised since 1994, which brings together the documentary filmmakers from all over the world. Such films as the Oscar-winning “Searching for Sugarman” and the Oscar-nominee “The Act of Killing” were discovered in this festival.

The film “I’m not from here” tells a story of Josebe, a Basque woman from San Sebastian, and her daily life in a retirement home in Santiago, where she keeps fighting her memories and the fact that this is not her first time in here. This film is the first outcome of the cooperation between the Lithuanian Film Centre and the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival. This cooperation started when an agreement was signed at the end of 2012 on the participation of the Lithuanian filmmakers in a film co-production promotion program CPH:LAB.

The Sheffield Festival award is the fourth award to the film by Giedrė Žickytė and Maite Alberdi: the film “I’m not from here” received the main award for the Best Short Film at its global premiere in the Visions du Réel festival in Switzerland, then it got the Public Award in Dokumenta Madrid festival in Spain, and it also received an important award “Prix EFA Krakow 2016” in the international Krakow Film Festival; it was nominated in the Best European Short film category in the 29th European Film Awards, which is taking place in December, in Wrocław (Poland).

The co-production film by Lithuania, Chile and Denmark received funding from the CPH:DOX programme fund of Copenhagen Documentary Film Festival, to which the national film centres participating in the programme contribute. The presentation of the film “I’m not from here” in the Sheffield International Film Festival was partly funded by the Lithuanian Film Centre. The film will be premiered in Lithuania in autumn, at the international Scanorama Film Festival.
