Lithuanian Cinema will Begin 2018 with a Film Retrospective in Paris
A cultural event series in France dedicated for the 100th anniversary of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania will be opened with one of the most significant projects of national cinema presentation in Europe. After three years of negotiations, an agreement was concluded this week between the Lithuanian Cinema Centre, the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the French Republic and one of the largest film libraries in the world, Cinémathèque Française, based in Paris. The Lithuanian film program, which will last for almost a month, will begin in January of the following year.
The Lithuanian cinema retrospective will consist of over 30 pieces selected by Caroline Maleville, program maker for Cinémathèque Française. Famous French film critic Arnaud Hée described the program as surprising, diverse and worth discovering. Its striking accent will be the films of the recognized Lithuanian filmmakers Jonas Mekas and Šarūnas Bartas. Viewers will also see a collection of documentaries from 1990 to present, the short movies and animated cartoons of the recent years, classical Lithuanian cinema and feature films created in the independent Lithuania.
“The presentation of this film program to the French cinema community is a great achievement and recognition of the Lithuanian cinema. It is a great honour to enter the prestigious French film industry. Working with the film library program makers made it possible to have a different look at our cinema, and the retrospective covers several generations of artists, different genres and styles. We are happy to be able to begin the year of the Lithuanian Centenary in such way”, - says Rolandas Kvietkauskas, Director of the Lithuanian Film Centre.
“I have no doubt that this cooperation between the Lithuanian Film Centre and the Paris Film Library will develop into a long-lasting relationship and in the future will open the door for most Lithuanian directors to present their work in this world-renowned cultural institution. It is important that it is cinema that will begin the cycle of cultural events joining all areas of art dedicated for the 100th anniversary of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania, which will highlight the achievements of Lithuanian artists to the French cultural community and our country will be presented primarily as a country that cherishes the exceptional art traditions, creativity and dynamics of the cultural life”, - notes the initiator of the project, Lithuanian Culture Attaché in France Vida Gražienė.
The detailed program will be published at the end of the year, after coordinating the final accents of the program. The Lithuanian film retrospective in Paris will begin on January 15, 2018. The program is organized by the Lithuanian Film Centre in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the French Republic.
