Virgilijus Alekna Left All Rivals Behind
On Friday, July 29, Virgilijus Alekna has won the men‘s discus throw event at the Samsung Diamond League, a leading track and field competition held in Stockholm. The 39 year old double Olympic and World champion Alekna heaved the discus to 65.05m on his best third attempt leaving all his ten rivals behind.

At his first attempt Alekna threw the disc 62.81m, at second – 61.31m and at sixth – 62.61m, while he fouled with his fourth and fifth throws.
The second was Olympic Games and World Championships silver medallist, Poland‘s Piotr Malachowski with his best throw of 64.96m.
The third place went to Yénnifer Frank Casanas from Spain (63.42m) and Gerd Kanter of Estonia finished in fifth place with 62.98m.
After a total of 11 mens’ discus competitions of the Diamond League series, Alekna ranks second in the Diamond League standings with 9 points, catching up with the DL leader Gerd Kanter. Germany’s Robert Harting is the third with 8 points followed by Piotr Malachowski (fourth with 5 points) and Yénnifer Frank Casanas (fifth with 4 points).
